Chennai Super Kings won the IPL match with Dhoni's effort - Sourav Ganguly's Kolkata Knight Riders lose their first game in IPL 2010

Sometimes it seems that the IPL is a lackluster extravaganza but all the ideology goes bang along with each and every six that is scored. When Mahendra Singh Dhoni bats Chennai Super Kings singlehandedly to a comfortable win, the interests are alive. Probably, I am as hypocritical as some of the Sex Scandal Swamijis.

When Matthew Hayden failed, when a rather inexperienced Suresh Raina did and all other specialist players did, Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni leads by example. He is the first ever Captain who has done so. Some of the Cricket lovers argue that it is Sourav Ganguly who started this trend but it is true that Sourav Ganguly lead from the front but when the team is down in spirits, it is Mahendra Singh Dhoni who shows what next to do.

"Do as I do, Don't do as I say," goes well for the Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. This is characteristic of Dhoni even in One Day Internationals, T20 Internationals and also the IPL. He seems to have a surefire plan to win! Sometimes, I feel that Dhoni takes a backseat and lets the opposition take advantage.

He seems to be complacent and then suddenly the team which should have lost by 140 runs goes on to score a 250 to lose. This is a common occurrence. I have seen this in Dhoni's Captaincy but it is also not true that he sits complacent and takes some rest when he feels he is good enough to win.

So many of the Captains in the past have failed to win in crucial encounters just when they seemed to be winning all along. That includes Mohammed Azharuddin and even Sourav Ganguly to some extent. By the way, incidentally, Dhoni won against his former Captain Sourav Ganguly yesterday!

The Mahendra Singh Dhoni Trivia

Yesterday, when Sunil Gavaskar asked Dhoni before the toss, if Dhoni liked to be called Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Dhoni, MSD or Mahi, Mahendra Singh Dhoni said, he liked being called "Mahi" as that is what friends used to call him when he was young. People called him in various names and he always liked being called "Mahi". Then, a moment later, Sunil Gavaskar said, "I am not holding you up.....," the toss was already going to happen.

Dhoni ran towards those present for the toss. He probably was thinking that the Camera was not yet switched on. But then, it was for everyone to see. Dhoni again embarrassingly had to join Sourav Ganguly and had to run once more towards him. Then, as luck commanded, Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first which did not seem to be a wise decision.

Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders - the toss and the 2010 IPL

When Sourav Ganguly was asked about the decision, he said that he would have opted to field first, had he won the toss. It seemed that Sourav Ganguly was apparently happy with Dhoni's decision and seemed to indicate that batting first was a wrong decision to make.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that if their (Chennai Super Kings) strength was batting, they would be advised to chase, but if their strength was batting, they could post a huge total on the board and let the opponents chase. As it turned out, Sourav Ganguly seemed to be right with his remarks and was probably pleased with the result in the initial overs.

But then, a determined Mahendra Singh Dhoni took the crease and made sure that the team posted a decent total on the board. Dhoni's 66 off 33 balls along with Subramaniam Badrinath's 43 off 33 took Chennai Super Kings to a total of 164. Things could change within a few overs in Twenty20 Cricket and Dhoni did not fail to utilize that.

In the second innings Dhoni's men pulled off a comfortable victory by a big margin by Twenty20 standards. The partnership between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Subramaniam Badrinath was 109 in just 65 balls which helped the Chennai Super Kings to victory.

However, bad luck continues for the Chennai Super Kings as Dhoni is out of IPL 2010 for ten more days due to an injured elbow. It remains to be seen how the inexperienced Suresh Raina will lead the side. There also can be a better choice for captaincy but the inexperienced Chennai Super Kings might have to go with Suresh Raina as the Captain. I personally reckon Lakshmipathy Balaji could become the Captain for the next few games of the Chennai Super Kings until Mahendra Singh Dhoni returns.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni - a successful icon of modern youth

To all the youngsters, Mahendra Singh Dhoni may remain the icon or the ideal person who inspires to bring success into their lives! Dhoni uses sheer intellect, intelligence, presence of mind, talent, ability, hard work, clarity of thought and mind to become the most successful youth icon! Even Yuvraj Singh has not lost to Dhoni when he was considered to be the potential Captain after Rahul Dravid.

Yuvraj Singh lost out to his own imbalances in mind, heart and physique. Dhoni could keep himself physically coordinated by his mind which is the most important thing to a sportsman. The mind and body coordination is what that keeps Sachin Tendulkar going and this does for Dhoni too!

The emotional competency of Dhoni was absent in Yuvraj! And Dhoni's emotional competency was not due to his upbringing or his childhood experiences, but it is one of sheer maturity and understanding. Let us hope that Dhoni could win the 2011 Cricket World Cup with ease with a determined Sachin Tendulkar beside in his armory!
